The BillionTrees Project was initiated in 2020 to help further our mission to protect, preserve and restore the natural environment of our nation's major rivers and their watersheds. Our mission is to not only clean up the river ways but to also enhance the watershed by planting native trees and removing invasive plants.
Our Vision
We envision thriving river ecosystems where native flora and fauna flourish, communities have access to clean water, and sustainable agricultural practices work in harmony with the natural environment. Every tree we plant and every invasive species we remove brings us closer to healthier watersheds that will benefit generations to come.
What We Do
Our work spans three interconnected focus areas that strengthen both our waterways and the communities that depend on them. Through hands-on restoration projects, we mobilize volunteers and partner organizations to remove trash and pollutants from riverbanks while systematically eliminating invasive plant species that threaten native ecosystems. Our reforestation efforts focus on planting native trees that stabilize soil, filter runoff, and provide critical habitat for wildlife.
Recognizing that healthy rivers depend on healthy land use practices, we also work closely with farmers and landowners to promote sustainable agriculture. We provide education and resources on soil conservation, natural buffer zones, and farming techniques that protect water quality while maintaining productive land.
Why It Matters
Rivers and their watersheds are the lifeblood of our communities, providing drinking water, supporting diverse ecosystems, and offering recreational opportunities. However, decades of pollution, deforestation, and invasive species have degraded many of these vital systems. By restoring native plant communities and promoting sustainable land management, we're not just cleaning up rivers—we're rebuilding the natural infrastructure that keeps our water clean, our soil healthy, and our communities resilient.
Join Us
Since 2020, we've engaged thousands of volunteers, planted hundreds of thousands of native trees, and cleaned countless miles of riverbank. But our work is far from finished. Whether you're a volunteer, donor, partner organization, or landowner, there's a place for you in our mission to restore and protect our precious waterways.
